No such thing as bad weather

All programs meet rain or shine, except in rare cases when the weather creates conditions that are too dangerous for travel.  Check the calendar or Facebook for any last-minute programming updates.

Dress for success

The majority of program time is spent out in the elements so be sure to dress appropriately for the weather.  Layers are best and it's always safer to over-dress rather than under-dress.  If you find yourself needing gear, Drew's Closet has items for loan, and don't forget to check out our how-to-dress guide.  Closed toe shoes are recommended.

Nature is natural

A main objective of WPO programs is teaching how to be safe outdoors, and some things like ticks are inevitable.  Prevention is key: wear protective clothing, change clothes as soon as you get home, shower as soon as you can, and perform a full-body tick check after spending time outdoors.  We highly recommend reviewing the tick safety guide created by The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Health.

Pay what you can

We believe that nature should be free and we never want anyone to miss out over payment, so our programs are pay-what-you-can.  Donations can be made in any amount, any frequency, through a variety of methods.

Showing up is half the battle

We have found through experience that kids adapt better to our programs when they are attending consistently, but we understand that life happens.  There is no formal attendance policy and you are welcome to drop in on any program as it suits your schedule, but your kid will become more comfortable in nature with routine and consistency.

Know your limits

Hiking is a large component of all WPO programs and Washington Park has over 4 miles of unpaved trails, much of which is bumpy, uneven, and sloping.  Strollers and mobility devices are permitted within the park; however, we strongly recommend that all participants plan to travel by foot.  Baby carriers are good alternatives for our youngest members who are still learning to walk.
